Brief Facts: Dominica was first recognized a French colony until it went under British control in 1759. It became a British Associated State in 1967 until Dominica became independent in 1978. Flag Information: The Dominican flag adopted in 1978 is one of the most interesting flags representing the Caribbean. The green background represents the lush vegetation of the island. A tricolor cross symbolizes the Christian faith of the people and its three colors recall the native Indians, the fertile soil, and the island’s pure water. Dominica’s national bird, the sisserou parrot, which is also an endangered species, sits proudly in the center of the flag surrounded by a red disk for social justice and ten stars representing the the ten parishes.
