Brief Facts: Cuba, located just a few miles south of Florida is the
only Communist state in the Americas. Once a Spanish colony, Cuba gained
its independence in 1902. Flag Information: The Cuban flag was designed in 1848 for the liberation movement that sought to detach Cuba from Spain and make it into a state of the US but the flag was not officially adopted until 1902. The three blue stripes stand for the three sectors into which Cuba was divided by the Spaniards and the white stripes represent the pure intentions of the revolutionaries for justice. The triangle symbolizes equality and fraternity, the red stands for the blood that was shed in the struggle for independence and the star represents another star that would be added to the North American flag.
